Scalloping is a fun activity for the whole family . Most Scallops are filter feeders and eat plankton . Scallops are a marine bivalve mollusk . Bay Scallops are highly prized as a food source . Most Scallops are free living and can swim by rapidly opening and closing their shell . The Bay Scallop population on the east coast of the United States has been greatly diminished . This decrease is due to several factors, but mostly to a reduction in sea grasses ( to which bay Scallop spat attach) due to increased coastal development and run off . Another factor is reduction in shark due to overfishing . Sharks feed on rays which are the main predator of Scallops . With the Shark population reduced, the rays have been free to dine on Scallops to the point of greatly reducing their numbers . The Scallop count in St Joe Bay for 2013 is 20. This is down from 154. 8 in 2011. The count is done by biologist in ten to twenty stations at each of ten locations along the gulf coast of Florida . At each station, biologist count all scallops within a six hundred meter area . These studies are usually done in June and areas open to recreational harvest are completed before the season opens .
